PRESS RELEASE:

The Salvation Army Announces Two Literacy Events During National Reading Month.

Grand Rapids, MI March 8, 2012 – March is National Reading Month and The Salvation Army, together with donations from the community and support from Crowe Horwath and The LEAGUE Michigan and other community partners, will be doing their part to promote literacy by participating in two separate events.

“Army of Readers” is a program consisting of over 30 young professional and college student volunteers who will attend an orientation session at The Salvation Army before visiting classrooms in Grand Rapids to read an assigned book and administer a classroom activity related to their specific book. This program will provide an opportunity for over 750 school-age children to partake in the gift of literacy right in their own classroom. “The Army of Readers” program event will take place on Friday, March 16 between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. in over 30 classrooms in several Grand Rapids schools. The media is invited to attend a reading session at William C. Abney Academy, located at 1435 Fulton Street East from 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

“Read ‘N Give” is a program that will provide The Salvation Army with an opportunity to distribute nearly 5,000 books to children and their families that have been donated by area schools and school districts as well as numerous local business sponsors. Distribution of books to previous “Army of Readers” student participants in the “Read ‘N Give” program will take place on Saturday, April 28 at The Salvation Army’s Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, located at 2500 South Division from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon and at The Salvation Army’s Fulton Heights Corps Community Center, located at 1235 Fulton Street East from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

The Salvation Army is thrilled to participate in a community activity that raises awareness of the issue of literacy,” said Captain Bob Mueller, The Salvation Army’s Kent County Coordinator. “In addition, it is through the generosity of the local community and the partnership with organizations like Crowe Horwath and The LEAGUE Michigan that we are able to distribute nearly 5,000 books from our two local Corps Community Centers on April 28,” Captain Mueller added.
